Westport has partnered with the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) to deliver the $13.5 million WAMSI-Westport Marine Science Program. This 3-year program is developing the latest data, information and modelling on the complex environmental systems and community values associated with Cockburn Sound.

Investigating the mechanisms impacting nutrient flux in Cockburn Sound, including flow, transport and biogeochemical reactions

Cockburn Sound has historically been impacted by nitrogen contamination and groundwater pollutants. 

This report presents a detailed analysis of nitrogen discharge from groundwater into Cockburn Sound and investigates the complex mechanisms governing nitrogen transport and transformation at the groundwater–marine interface in Cockburn Sound. Using high-resolution, local-scale numerical models, the research explores how aquifer stratigraphy, tidal dynamics, and biogeochemical processes influence nitrogen discharge into the Sound. 

This research provides valuable insights for managing nitrogen fluxes into Cockburn Sound, informing both future scientific studies and environmental management strategies.

Westport will use this report to inform its environmental management strategy and monitoring programs, to support the long-term health of Cockburn Sound.
