Westport will help unlock new opportunities for investment, jobs and regional prosperity through the development of the Kwinana Industrial Area.

The Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) is Western Australia’s premiere industrial zone.

Westport planning is underway to support future growth, freight efficiency and innovation within the KIA.

Engaging with Westport

The development of the new container port will significantly transform the Kwinana Industrial Area.

Westport is working closely with the State and Local government, the Kwinana Industries Council, and the industries and businesses in the area to identify opportunities for improvements within the KIA.

There will be opportunities for industrial neighbours to engage with Westport about the detailed design as it proceeds, so we can understand and collaborate around the disruptions of development, and the opportunities to improve the existing infrastructure.

Please subscribe to our Navigate newsletters for specific industry updates on the port precinct, which includes Weston Street in the north, Rockingham Road to the east and Donaldson Road to the south.

We offer briefings for local industry to the Board of the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) as required, and are working closely with neighbouring heavy industries that are directly impacted by this stage of development.

Road upgrades

Benefits of development for the KIA

There have been calls from industry to invest in road and rail infrastructure to support prosperity of the KIA and businesses in the area.

The proposed Westport facilities and supply chain offers specific benefits for the KIA, including:

  • Upgrades to the road infrastructure in and around the KIA, including upgrades to Anketell Road and a long-term plan to create a strategic east-west freight link between Kwinana and Tonkin Highway in Oakford.
  • Redevelopment of the Kwinana Bulk Terminal integrated into the container terminal.
  • Upgrades to the rail infrastructure servicing the KIA, including some duplication of tracks.
  • Ongoing access to existing Kwinana Outer Harbour berths during construction of the new port facilities.
  • Support for the industrial expansion and growth of the Western Trade Coast as a nationally significant hub.

The Western Trade Coast

The Kwinana Industrial Area is part of the broader Western Trade Coast, which includes the Australian Marine Complex, Latitude 32 and Rockingham Industry Zone.

Westport will be delivered alongside other major infrastructure projects across the Western Trade Coast, including Defence developments at Henderson and Garden Island, the redevelopment of the Kwinana Bulk Terminal and expansion of the Kwinana Bulk Jetty.

These and other initiatives are part of the State and Federal Governments’ strategies to transform Perth’s premier industrial precinct into a Global Advanced Industries Hub that will position Western Australia as a leader for defence, trade, and clean energy industries, creating long-term local jobs and diversify the State’s economy.
