Westport's Community Survey: What we heard

Community top priorities for Westport revealed

01 October 2024

With Westport planning to future-proof WA’s container trade by developing new port facilities in Kwinana, a recent community survey has identified the top priorities the community wants Westport to ‘get right’.

From 812 submissions, 770 people responded to the question: “What do we need to get right, in planning for Westport?” Responses were grouped into 19 different themes, with the marine environment the top-ranked theme. This was followed by road upgrades and freight rail.

About 43% of those surveyed said they had at least a ‘good’ knowledge of Westport, with the survey also showing that those who are aware saw job development as a positive outcome from the development and operation of the new port facilities and supply chain.

The community feedback is helping Westport understand what matters most to the WA public, with findings shared across the Westport team to guide the approach as planning for this program of major infrastructure progresses.

Westport acknowledges there will be short-term impacts to the marine environment during the port development, and is committed to the long-term sustainability of Cockburn Sound, with the project design supported by the $13.5m WAMSI-Westport Marine Science Program. This is providing the best understanding of the Cockburn Sound ecosystem to date, with all findings made publicly available as they are completed over the coming months.
