Marine geotechnical investigations are underway in Cockburn Sound

These investigations are collecting core samples from below the seabed to inform Westport's design.

Nick Abraham of Warrang-Bridil lead a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony at the launch of the investigations.

Marine geotechnical investigations have commenced in Cockburn Sound, a key milestone in the design planning stage for Westport.

Formally launching the investigations with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, Nick Abraham of Warrang-Bridil shared stories about Noongar history, including the movement of the Rainbow Serpent throughout Perth and Derbal Nara (Cockburn Sound).

Engineering firm WSP were awarded the contract after a tender process to conduct the investigations, operating two jack-up barges to drill below the seabed collecting soil and rock samples. These samples will then be tested to understand the sub-sea conditions in the areas where the development is proposed including the strength, type, and stability of the ground. This data is important for the design of Westport and will be used to ensure the infrastructure is safe, efficient, and long-lasting.

The marine geotechnical investigations are scheduled to operate across Cockburn Sound to mid-2026.
